A 55-year-old man tragically lost his life overnight from Friday to Saturday after an exchange of gunfire with police at his parents’ home in Barbençon, Wallonia.
The man, who had fired shots inside the family home moments earlier, was fatally wounded when he opened fire at officers who had responded to the scene.
According to the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office, the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the suspect, who lived with his parents, brandished a firearm during a family gathering. He fired twice inside the house, prompting a family member to call the police for help.
Local police officers, supported by special units, arrived at the residential area of Barbençon, a small town situated in the province of Hainaut.
Upon their arrival, the man, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, fired at the officers through a glass window, striking out at those responding to the situation.
“He saw the officers and fired towards them, prompting a response from two officers,” the prosecutor explained on Sunday morning.
The officers returned fire, and one of the shots struck the suspect, fatally wounding him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man had been previously known to the police, according to the prosecutor’s office, although further details on his prior interactions with law enforcement have not been disclosed.
